Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's ODI Lineup Versus Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-match ODI series against India, as high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected selection.

Recent Form Lead to Exclusion

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI team following managing only a single run in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a highest score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.

The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

Labuschagne has shown signs of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia look for a solution to their top-order woes.

Pace Returns and Injury Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after being rested since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule

Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
